JAMES BOND

I've been searching for genred idents, as the brief says, 'Design and produce a set of 5 idents that promote a season of films from a given genre'.
So I typed in sci fi idents in youtube and I came across a few interesting ones!! :)

BBC3 Ident

Found this! Well good! When we first read the brief, I imagined doing something like this. Along the same lines anyway.

Genres

Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. Hollywood's classic film noir period is generally regarded as stretching from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. Film noir of this era is associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography, while many of the prototypical stories and much of the attitude of classic noir derive from the hardboiled school of crime fiction that emerged in the United States during theDepression.

The term film noir (French for "black film"),[1] first applied to Hollywood movies by French critic Nino Frank in 1946, was unknown to most American film industry professionals of the classic era.[2] Cinema historians and critics defined the noir canon in retrospect; before the notion was widely adopted in the 1970s, many of the classic film noirs were referred to as melodramas.[a] The question of whether film noir qualifies as a distinct genreis a matter of on-going debate among scholars.

Television research

Yep, been well busy researching! :D
Was watching some program last night, and this advert came on. It's amazing! There's so many animation techniques used, plenty in which can be used in the work we're doing now.
I've managed to nab a fair few of the BBC 2 idents and have compared them to how the letters have been used in this advert. Some of the techniques could be put into practice for the idents I will be making for a series of television programs.

Oooo interesting!

I've come across this tutorial for after effects! It's 15 minutes long, but it touches on things we haven't yet been introduced to, and looks soooo good! It's something I think most people could quite easiy copy, or at least have a go at!

''In this tutorial you'll learn how to create animated typography synchronized with musical events (lyrics). You'll learn how to fit your typography to a rhythm, add dynamic animations and use the camera and motion blur to create a high-end final effect. This tutorial showcases a technique that is highly sought after in motion graphics today.''

Here's the final video...

Relation..

I've been on the ol' youtube again and came across this fine video. It uses techniques I want to use for my animation. I want to use the 3 dimensional effect whilst my letters fall to the ground. Just thought it'd be good to get it up here and give an idea as to the kind of thing I aim to produce. :)

What are idents??

The history of BBC television idents starts in the early 1950's, when the BBC first displayed a logo between programmes to identify its service. As new technology has become abailable, these decives have evolved from simple still black and white images to the sophisticated full colour short films seen today. With the arrival of digital services in the UK, and with them many more new channels, branding is perceived by broadcasters to be much more important, meaning that idents need to stand out from the competition.

The BBC Two ident from the channel's launch in 1964

First BBC Two in colour ident from 1967

The first ever computer generated ident and used from 1979 until 1986

Paint, was used from 1991 to 2001, and it was the first and last to be broadcast in that period

From 2001 until 2007 the '2' gained a personality as a 2 robot

Frame grabs

Since we'd been looking at timelines and such today, I thought I'd put some of what I'd learnt into practice. So I decided to take frame grabs from the main example of motion graphics... Daft Punk - Technologic.
I ended up grabbing 166 frames, so I won't be uploading them all on here!! I have, however, uploaded 2 seconds worth. Just for as an example.

It begins with a blank screen...

'Buy it'

'Use it'

'Break it'

'Fix it'

What is motion graphics?

''Motion graphics are graphics that use video
and/or animation technology to create the illusion of motion or a transforming appearance. These motion graphics are usually combined with audio for use in multimedia projects. Motion graphics are usually displayed via electronic media technology, but may be displayed via manual powered technology as well. The term is useful for distinguishing still graphics from graphics with a transforming appearance over time without over-specifying the form.''

Some more typography motion graphics..

Another animation to Daft Punk. Although it's not really what we're going to be doing, I'm still liking it because of its structure. Having all of the words already layed out, and simply moving from each to each is really nice.

How to storyboard

I came across this and thought I may as well whack it up on here. I think he talks more about storyboarding for a film, but I guess, storyboarding's storyboarding!
